Orangery FAQs

What is an orangery?

The term ‘orangery’ originated from Italy and grew in popularity in the 17th century – fast forward to today and orangeries can enhance any home with an elegant, classic look and provide a versatile new living space.

To what extent can I expect to spend on an orangery?

An orangery typically costs roughly £2,500 per square metre to build. All materials and labour, as well as the installation of plumbing, wiring, drywall, and light fixtures, are factored into this price. Naturally, this may vary and might be lesser if you go for a uPVC construction and build it on your own.

Is an orangery less expensive than an extension?

Construction costs for an orangery are typically 25-50% lower per square metre than those of a traditional one-story addition. When compared to extensions and conservatories, the cost to build an orangery is among the lowest.

Do I need planning permission for an orangery?

This is a question that we get asked a lot by our customers. Provided your orangery extension does not exceed these general guidelines, they should always be considered a permitted development right.

Why is it named an orangery?

Orangeries were traditionally huge, extravagant structures used to cultivate orange trees in great-period mansions. The pillars’ strength protected the oranges, yet wide expanses of glass ensured that the sun’s warmth nurtured the plants.

What distinguishes conservatories from orangeries?

The roofs of the two buildings are fundamentally different in design. One key distinction between a conservatory and an orangery is that the former typically has a full glass roof, while the latter often has a solid perimeter roof with roof lanterns to let light in.

Could I install a kitchen in the orangery?

Orangeries can function as a number of different rooms, including a kitchen, eating area, living room, playroom, music room, or even an office. However, a two-storey addition may be the ideal choice if you want something larger or extra bedroom space
